Western Piedmont Symphony

Message from John

Welcome to the 42nd season of Masterworks Concerts by the Western Piedmont Symphony.  We present outstanding guest artists on each program and this year we focus on three of America’s most outstanding wind and brass players:  Clarinetist Sean Osborn at a very young age has already “retired” from a career many of us would covet at any age.  He is a versatile musician-composer of the highest order.

You will also notice a different set of string principals at each concert.  This season we are auditioning for a new string quartet to assume our Hickory Metro Residency beginning with the 2007-08 season.   Four great quartets: La Catrina, Hyperion, Kailas, and Vega will be spending two weeks each working with our orchestra and presenting a myriad of concert and outreach activities.  In April, the Degas Quartet will return for an alumni visit.   I hope this will encourage you to attend their Chamber Classics programs as well.

Thank you for being here, supporting our fine orchestra, and supporting fine music in the Unifour.

Sincerely,

John Gordon Ross

Community Events

The Western Piedmont Symphony will once again take classical music on the road  in November to one of the Unifour’s oldest communities with the Ridgeview Classical Music Festival.  A celebration of music within the Ridgeview community will showcase a Rug Concert for preschoolers, Silver Serenades for senior citizens, informative lectures, hands-on demonstrations for elementary school students.

Beyond Masterworks and Chamber Classics, our musicians take to the road for another season of in-school concerts.  4th and 5th graders throughout the Unifour get to hear a live orchestra.  This season’s program focuses on how music is put together with the theme “Great Form”.   Several of our string quartet in-schools will center on “Music of the Stars” tying music to astronomy as elementary students get their first exposure to live classical music and this wonderful aspect of scientific study.

We are already planning another summer of outdoor concerts with light classics and patriotic pops and there will be some even bigger surprises for 2007-08.
