The Western Piedmont Youth Symphony was founded over 30 seasons ago by the second conductor of WPS, Martin Bellar. The Youth Symphony was established for young musicians interested in playing in an orchestra with the full
complement of winds, brass, percussion, as well as strings. The WPS Youth Orchestra is one of the largest youth orchestras in the state.

Membership is by annual competitive audition in late August and early September. Students from middle school through college within the Unifour region and beyond are eligible to participate.

The Youth Symphony serves as a valuable component of a strong music education which includes school music programs and individual instruction.
